How It Works

What's “energy deregulation” & “energy choice”?!

Great question! Right now, regardless of where you get your energy from – your local utility or another supplier – your bill is comprised of two parts and two charges already.

Energy Used In Your Home

  1. The first charge is the supply charge. Some energy bills refer to it as consumption. This is the charge for the amount electricity and/or natural gas you used. This charge will be based on your rate per kilowatt hour (electricity) or therm (natural gas) multiplied by the amount you used. The more you use, the higher your bill will be. Like with anything in life! Depending on who your supplier is (the utility or another energy supplier like Alpha Gas and Electric), that company name will be shown on the supply (or consumption) portion of the bill. When you choose Alpha Gas and Electric, we will be the ones shown on your bill for that part. Remember, you’re already paying it to someone – this isn’t a new or added charge.

Getting The Energy Into Your Home

  2. The second charge on every utility bill that you’re already paying is the “delivery charge” or the “distribution” charge. This is the charge to get that energy supply that you use into your home and is always done by your local utility. They are the ones delivering and charging you for that portion.

In Summary

So one bill, two charges (that regardless of who you’re with now, you’re paying). In our case, the supply will be by Alpha Gas and Electric and the Delivery by your local utility.

Switching energy suppliers has wonderful benefits. Read about them here and the best part is that you’re still getting just one bill from your utility and you’re still sending in one payment to your utility. You send us nothing. The utility will take the funds from the supply portion of your bill and pass on our portion, the supply portion, to us.

Remember

Your utility will still respond to emergencies, service your account and be responsible for all things that equipment-related.
